World Disability Day

Image
It is ingrained in the Indic consciousness to accept all people. This also applies to those with special needs. With time and influence of the Western philosophy, this consciousness was tarred and a sudden feeling of fear and disgust was born in our minds for our specially-abled people. Times are changing and people are rising from the slumber of ignorance and institutions such as Asha Niketan are changing our thought process. In pursuit of raising awareness, Asha Niketan orchestrated a rally today. World Disability Day presents an opportune moment to grant individuals with special needs a platform to voice their perspectives, emphasizing the importance of treating them with dignity rather than pity.  Both St. Patrick’s Higher Secondary School and St. Vincent’s High and Technical School have consistently shown their support for such endeavors. Consequently, we, the students, together with our teachers, assembled, brandishing banners, placards, and signs adorned with affirming messa

Van Mahotsav

Van Mahotsav Van Mahotsav or Vanamahotsava, lit. 'Forest festival', is an annual one-week tree-planting festival in India celebrated in the first week of July. By encouraging Indians to support tree planting and tending, festival organisers hope to create more forests in the country. It would provide alternative fuels, increase production of food resources, build shelter belts around fields to increase productivity, provide food and shade for cattle, offer shade and decorative landscapes, reduce drought, and help to prevent soil erosion. The first week of July is just the right time for planting trees in most parts of India since it coincides with the monsoon. History With the onset of the monsoon, tens and thousands of saplings are planted all across India and the festival literally is the celebration and creation of new life. Van Mahotsav was started back in the year 1950 by K.M. Munshi, who, back then, was a Union Minister for Agriculture and Food.  The main aim of this Maho

International Education Day

International Education Day International Day of Education is an annual international observance day held on January 24 and is dedicated to education. On December 3, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming January 24 as the International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education in bringing global peace and sustainable development.  Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind. Today, 258 million children and youth still do not attend school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. Students of Nai Disha, stu

Cover Story - National Education Policy(NEP) 2020

Image
The implementation of previous policies on education had focused largely on issues of access and equity. The unfinished agenda of the National Policy on Education 1986 , modified in 1992 (NPE 1986/92), is appropriately dealt with in NEP 2020. A major development since the last Policy of 1986/92 has been the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 which laid down legal underpinnings for achieving universal elementary education.  For our first cover story, we will be delving into the key agendas from NEP 2020 . For the convenience of our readers, we have included a brief summary as well. This issue of our NewsDesk is quite info-heavy, so grab some snacks and enjoy reading!
